What's Your Magic Number?

by Amy Duncan, ACE-certified Personal Trainer

Heart rate is one of the most popular ways to measure the intensity of your workout now that monitors have become so common and relatively inexpensive. Then comes the question; what should my heart rate be during my workout? Well, that depends on your current fitness level and your fitness goals.

Start by determining your fitness level by getting your resting heart rate. Before jumping out of bed, take your pulse for 60 seconds. Take your pulse three mornings in a row. Record the average as your resting heart rate.
